We, the artist-duo Prothmann and Krüger (D), a group called Artless Foundation (NL) and myself made an exhibition of three outside installations.

VIRTUAL LANDFILL - During the preparations of my installation the theme Reversal got very much connected to Recycling, as an ultimate and also urgent example of both forced change and economic opportunity. I came up with VIRTUAL LANDFILL as a place where people could bring waste material and where this potential crude matter could also be transformed - on the spot - into something new. I wanted a compact place, a shed, where matter, handicraft and inventivity merged.

Working on this idea my attention was drawn to a photo I made back in 2008 during a citywalk in the Belgium city of Gent. The picture has a surrealist duality. At first you see a sea sight with waves, but looking more closely it is nothing but layered plastic with condensed moisture in between. A link to the Plastic Soup problem in our oceans was obvious at that stage, so I decided to connect Virtual Landfill to the issue of plastic waste.

Eventually, VIRTUAL LANDFILL consisted of a wooden construction made of floorboards from an old Amsterdam school, in which I created a little plastic laboratory, a storing room, an exhibition space and a plastic trash basket outside.
