biographical introduction - music, painting, film, photography, installation and sculpture

by Thomas Bovenboer

Jeroen Huisman (1964) works and lives in Arnhem, The Netherlands, and is connected to a wide range of expressive media.

music

Music was Jeroen Huisman's first love. In 1983 he got hooked to experimental electro-acoustic music, when he bought his first synthesiser, a Yamaha CS15. Being a childhood flute player he mixed that instrument, among others, with simple dub-techniques and made several audio cassettes, which led to the creation of cassette label BAK Tapes (Bijna Alles Kan Tapes, meaning: almost anything goes tapes) together with friend Roelof Bakker. They also formed the band Disturbed Life (later Efil Debrutsid with other musicians), based on the novel Disturbed Live by Etty Hillesum.

Around 1986 he did some live noisy electro music gigs and lofi recordings with artist friend Kees Veltman, calling their duo ''Hiofarwa''. Lateron, Jeroen kept this name for his musical projects. By this time, he was making several contributions to international cassette labels. His music was published on various music cassettes.

film and video

During his study on the art academy in Arnhem (now artEZ), around 1985, he got interested in working with super 8 film, and several films came about for life projection during concerts of local ''New Wave'' bands. He developed himself towards working as a VJ, combining super 8 loops and dia's, as well as some experiments with video animation, by the use of Amiga computers. Around 1988 he was involved in several early house parties as a VJ.

In 1987 Jeroen made a video documentary about Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK), in collaboration with film friend Coen van Hall, with title ''Novi Kollektivizim'', as a study project. Lateron, a documentary film about sung poetry in the Pamir mountains (Tajikistan) with title ''Mountains Protect'' by Coen van Hall came about, in which Jeroen was responsible for research, audio recording on location and video editing.

In 1991 Jeroen made a multimedia performance called ''Mission To Planet Earth'', with live film and dia projections combined with live music, written and conducted by Arnhem based electro-acoustic band Krybdyr.

From 2003 on to now serveral video works were made, of which a few to mention; Nature's Knife (SD video, 2003) concentrates on the process of melting ice creating temporary capricious glass-like light sculptures. Liquid (HD, 2017) shows a visual spectacle of backlit water, recorded under a bridge, where the contrast is so high that it resembles an artificial and very graphic fenomenon.

painting

From 1988 till 1998 Jeroen Huisman was active as a painter with a touch of assemblage. Many works in that era evolved around environmental themes, related to a period of rising awareness of the poluting habits of mankind. Somehow, Jeroen got anoyed of the endless, seemingly pointless, environmental streetprotests of the late 1970's and early 1980's he was involved in and decided to act as a chronicler of this era in his atelier, instead of being an activist. He also studied the creation of a poison free paint pallet and experimented with unusual materials in paint.

photography

Around the year 2000 (up till now) he began his personal investigation of the city space in his Fragmented City Archive. In this enormous photography project, consisting of hundreds of 35 mm negatives and digital files produced over the years, he examines his own sensitivity of watching with a camera during city walks, while focussing on his surroundings in a objet trouvé tradition. He wants to lift out futile or inconspicuous data into new and unforeseen experiences, often through surrealist eyes. Many European cities were visited for this project, and in 2024 a new tour will be made.

In 2014 Jeroen worked on a year long video work, ''i-2014'', concentrating on moving images around him as a daily habit for 365 days. The camera remains fixed onto a tripod, recording fragments of life as these unfold in front of the camera. The film edit follows the daily video sequences chronologically, creating a fragmented, almost hypnotic atmosphere.

installation and sculpture

Around 2012 Jeroen began creating installations and (light)sculptures. Like with his earlier paintings, he sometimes uses asemblage techniques, combined with the application of themoplastic materials. He developed a very personal palet of techniques with which he treats thermoplastic materials as if they were the basic material for life. The often amorphous shapes that come about are full with fine capricious structures and seem to refer to the way things in nature are possibly build. Jeroen Huisman applies his thermoplastics with the use of a glue gun and a 3D pencil. His sculptures somehow refer to fungi or deep ocean creatures and radiate an artificial kind of nature experience.

recycling

Ever since his first experiments with painting in the 1980's, Jeroen recognized the added meaning and value of recycled materials in his work. An object sometimes leads to the creation of a totally unexpected assembled work. Other times, for example, pressed or heated plastic waste is used as crude matter for a sculpture. Knowing that some parts of his work preexisted in this world with a create a time connection to the past, next to the simple neccesity to recycle in a environmentally sense.
