Particula Piston Plastoid - 2015   work in the studio

"The Family of Plastoids" is a growing group of light sculptures made of recycled plastic waste, a thermoplastic finish and LED light. I began to create these objects in my installation VIRTUAL LANDFILL during the 2015 edition of the annual art festival ''Kunst10daagse'' in Bergen (NL). More about Virtual Landfill >

Why the use of plastic in my work?

Plastic is one of the major materials I encounter during my many photo discoveries in cities. It lies carelessly scattered around, often already taken by nature when moss and mildew deposited itself on plastic surfaces. Blisters and packaging materials are also urban watercollectors. Rain and moister often gets trapped in between layers of plastic. On such an occasion I took the picture underneath. The image is remarkable because it suggests waves, but in fact is a plastic surface with drops of trapped water. Somehow it relates to the connection of plastic and water and the problematic situation we as humans create in our oceans; the plastic soup. This specific picture was the starting point of The Family Of Plastoids. I often use parts of my existing work as a fundament for new ideas.
